Where I've Been and What I've Been Doing Lately

A little update

Some of those who read this blog may have noticed that I haven't been very active in posting this month, and may have been wondering where I've been and what I've been doing, and so on.  Fear not, I have not abandoned this blog, and will return to posting here in the future.

However, I've also been working on a website for my fleet in the Massively Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), Star Trek Online (STO).  For those not familiar with the game, a "fleet" in STO is the equivalent of what some MMOs refer to as a "guild" or "clan," that is, a group of players of the game, organized through the game's mechanics, into an association.  Ideally, these groups should function in a tribe-like manner, cooperating for the betterment of the group as a group, and for the members of the group as individuals, with each member contributing to the group itself and helping other members get ahead in the game.

The fleet I started in STO is named "Tal'Diann," which is the name of the Military Intelligence organization in Romulan society.  Some of us are fans of the writings of Diane Duane, and the language which she created for the Romulans in her novels.  As such, use of the doaege Rihan (Romulan language) is welcome and encouraged within the fleet, although not required.  I'm also using the language quite a bit on the fleet website (with translation provided, of course), and have two pages on the site which provide resources for the language.

Gia'na t'Prell, Romulan Temporal Sciences -- The Prize, and the Price (Fan Fic)

As the room came back into focus, I found my balance and composed myself, breathing calmly, my eyes shutting out the light briefly, then darting around to take stock.

So many timelines.

Even "mirror" dimensions for all of them.

I am in the Prime again?  Everything seems to suggest that I am, but perhaps a few readings are in order.  Ship chronometer, check.  Sensors, check.  Crew compliment, check.  Duty officers?  Bridge officers?  Department Chiefs?  First, Second, Third Officers?  All check out.

Ship name?  Well, no, that changes too often.  Real name, code name, code name, real name, translation into thlIngan, translation into Aenglish, translation into Kolaric.  Temptress, Seduction, Seductress, Talon, Honor Blade, Tabadi, -- Empire, Republic, Federation, Syndicate ...

Even my own name, for that matter.  One day D'ian, another G'iana, another Di'on, or Gessatra, or G'Dessa, or Gessa, Charvon, Melani, Liviana, Gi'an, G'Pressa, Charvanek, Thea, t'Prell, T'Prell, ir'Virinat, the Succuba -- Tabadi, Agent, Operative, Spy, Saboteur, Asset, Medic, Doctor, Nurse, Ambassador, Entertainer, Researcher, Scientist, Engineer, Advisor, Governor, Adjutant, Colonist, Refugee, Prisoner, Diplomat, Bartender, Counselor, Commander, Technician, Captain, Ael'Riov, General, Vice Admiral, Lieutenant General, galae'Enriov, Praetor, Princess, Senator, Empress -- it all depends on the context of my mission.

At least one thing is certain.  I have the Memenda, the Honor Blade, the Sword of the Raptor Star, the Talon, the Lost Sword of S'harien, the Third Sword of S'task, whatever name one might give, the name failed to convey the awesome and terrible authority and responsibility which came as its companion.  The price of the prize.  Honor and Passion joined.  It sits here in my ready room.  I found it on Dewa-III, now ch'Mol'Rihan.  I retain custody of the Sword of the Raptor Star.  This custodianship is an honor, and my greatest passion.

The prize I sought was never the Enterprise.  No, I had my own vessels.  The Romulan Star Empire had superior vessels even then.  The Enterprise had to be scanned, however.

Hmm, yes.  Things to be learned from the vessel while it remains in our custody, after all.  From behind a temporal cloak, this time.  The Azure Nebula is filled with temporal anomalies, after all.  We shall appear as a T'Liss in place of the D7 off the starboard side of the Enterprise.

Enterprise.  Prize, Price.  I always arch a brow.  This curiosity of the Federation Standard Aenglish language had not eluded me before, and it will not elude me now.  But who was the trap, who the bait, who the trapper, who the trapped?  More to the point, who was the Prize, and what was the Price?

Spahkh, the First Officer, Chief Science Officer, whom they called "Spock."

He was my intended Prize.

Kirk, however, had other things in mind.

Kirk, the Captain of the Enterprise, sought the new cloaking device installed on my flagship, and all the ships in my fleet.

While I sought Spahkh's heart, Kirk plotted to obtain the cloaking device, leaving Spock as a decoy and distraction.

I had special Vulcan dishes prepared for Spahkh.  I served him Kali-fal.  I offered him a place with me in the Tal'Diann.  I whispered a secret in his ear.  I changed into more comfortable attire.  We began to make love.

There was an interruption.

Trickery!

I slapped him.

He appealed by demanding the right to the rite of statement.  I granted this.

He began defending himself to me.

Not to the Empire.

To me!

I interrupted.

He corrected me.

He resumed.

In the midst of this, his ship managed to lock on to him and beam him aboard, but I leapt into the transport beam with my arms around Spahkh.

That was my choice.

So is this.

When it was all over, and I was alone again with Spahkh, he stated that obtaining the cloaking device was his only motivation when he came aboard the Memenda.  The nuance in his vocalization, however, left room for something unsaid.  He had taught me already that omission of information did not constitute lying, to a Vulcan.  I had to be careful with my choice of words with this one, because other things were also excepted in the Vulcan sense of the idea.  His goal having been obtained, that is all he came away from the Talon with, I accused.  No, he countered me.  He said that I underestimated myself.

A challenge, and a surrender.

Well, Spahkh.  It will remain our secret, my prize, your heart, your price, my name -- and my heart.

He escorted me to my quarters aboard the Enterprise.

Somewhere, somewhen, I am certain he can sense the smile in my eyes ... and a chill in his heart ... and a thrill in his soul.

And I sit calmly watching, scanning, observing the timeline for any further deviations.  There have been too many already with these vessels and their crews, and here I am again, altering the timeline further by observing from yet another perspective.

But Spahkh's heart will remain my prize.  Not Nyota's.  Not Christine's.  Not T'Pring's.  Not Saavik's.    Not in this timeline.  This is my Prime Timeline, and I'll guard it.  My prize, my price.

In old style Terran reckoning, before the Federation Starfleet's Stardate had become the standard, the year 2268 (Stardate 5027.3) saw many interesting incidents.

Among them was a mission known in the Tal'Diann archive as "The Enterprise Incident."

Tal'Diann file on this ship and its captain is incomplete.  Some of the data suggests this vessel would not do such a thing without orders or a very good reason.  Why is this ship here?  Is Kirk the Commander of the vessel?  Why would the Federation's Flagship not only violate the Romulan-Federation Neutral Zone, but even intrude into Romulan Star Empire territory?  And a Vulcan First Officer. ... I shall have the ship's Commander, and First Officer, over for a chat.  End log."

The Bridge of the R.R.W. Di'on Charvon

Description of the shot above:

Subcommander Hiven (Chief Medical Officer, a Romulan man rescued from a Tal'Shiar holding cell where he was placed for speaking his mind) is standing to the right of the seated Vice Admiral.  Somewhat behind him, at a console, stands Subcommander Veril (Chief Engineer, a young Reman woman rescued from a combined Tal'Shiar/Elachi attack on her home colony).  To the left of and slightly behind the seated Vice Admiral stands Subcommander Tovan Khev (First Officer and Chief Tactical Officer, a young Romulan man about the same age as the Vice Admiral, and one of her childhood friends from the colony of Virinat, who escaped the Tal'Shiar/Elachi attack on Virinat with Gessatra).  Standing at a console in front and slightly to the left of the First Officer is Subcommander D'Vex (Chief of Operations, an older Romulan man, also from the colony of Virinat, captured by Elachi during the unprovoked attack on Virinat, and later freed from a stasis pod aboard an Elachi station).  On the raised landing to the rear of the bridge are two other young Romulan women;  behind and above the Chief Engineer, Subcommander Satra (Chief Science Officer, a refugee from yet another unprovoked Tal'Shiar/Elachi attack on yet another Romulan colony who had taken refuge among the Suliban and volunteered to join Gessatra's crew) stands concealed behind her console, and behind and above the Chief of Operations stands Subcommander Aeris (Chief of Security, offered as a potential recruit for Gessatra's bridge crew by Raenasa ch'Mol'Rihan, the New Romulus Command Center), partially obscured by her console.  The portal at the top of the stairs leads to the combined Ship's Captain's Ready Room (in this case, the Ship's Captain is Vice Admiral t'Prell) and Thalaron Generator Housing.

I am stating for character development purposes that Gessatra and Tovan are in their early 30s (in Human terms, although they are older chronologically, since the Romulan lifespan is longer than that of a Human), Hiven is in his mid 30s, Veril and Aeris are in their mid 20s, Satra is in her late 20s, and D'Vex is in his mid 40s.  Not shown here are several other members of Gessatra's Bridge Officer crew, including a Reman male (whose age I can't determine, although I would say he is probably no older than D'Vex), three more Romulan females (all in their 20s, I believe), and two Orion females (somewhere in the age range of 25-35 for each of these two), because everyone needs to sleep occasionally.

At the start of their careers (or rather, when I first started playing Gessatra), the time period was a few years before 2409 (the current year in Star Trek Online).  How many years, I'm not sure (nor do I recall any definite statement from the game's developers as to the precise length of time between the first mission of the Legacy of Romulus "season" and the standard "current game time" in STO (which has been the year "2409" for over three real-world years now).  However, the first mention of "Mol'Rihan" in the official chronology is from the year 2408, and this, it is said, refers to what was previously known as "Nova Roma" (a poor choice for name, for a number of reasons), a planet first mentioned in the official chronology in the year 2394.  "Nova Roma" cannot, however, be the planet now known by the name "Mol'Rihan" (more properly, "euhre ch'Mol'Rihan," literally "planet of [the] New Romulans"), as this planet was discovered after the Tal'Shiar and Elachi began attacking Romulan and Reman colony worlds, and the discovery was made by explorers from the newly formed "Romulan Republic," led by D'Tan and the Senate of the New Romulan Republic, whereas "Nova Roma" was chosen as the new site for the government of the Romulan Star Empire under the leadership of the Imperial Romulan Senate after the destruction of euhre ch'Rihan (the planet Romulus) due to the Hobus supernova.  I conclude based on this evidence that the beginning of the Legacy of Romulus "season" in STO had to be no more than 10 years before the current date, and (if the chronology isn't changed at some point in the future in order to make it more consistent with the idea that the start of Legacy of Romulus was in the past), possibly as recent as the end of 2408 or in the early months of 2409.  For the backstory of my character, though, I'm inclined to say that the attack on Virinat took place three years before the current date (which would put the attack in 2406), and that euhre ch'Mol'Rihan was discovered by the New Romulan Republic's explorers (among whom were included Gessatra and her crew) at the beginning of 2409.

[Note:  This is a report of my first test flight of the Mirror Ha'apax Advanced Warbird in the MMORPG Star Trek Online, done in-character as Vice Admiral Gessatra ir'Virinat t'Prell, Fleet Admiral of the Tal'Diann, the Military Intelligence fleet of the New Romulan Republic's Star Navy, a fleet allied with the Orion Syndicate and the Klingon Empire in their ongoing war with the United Federation of Planets and its Starfleet.]

Captain's Log, Stardate -309422.08742389653

Dhael'aishaes ch'Mol'Rihan LivianaCharvanek (literally, 'Warbird of New Romulus LivianaCharvanek' which would be designated "R.R.W. LivianaCharvanek" in Federation Standard Aenglish, the prefix standing for "Republican Romulan Warbird"),

Khre'Enriov (Vice-Admiral) Gessatra ir'Virinat t'Prell, Galae'Enriov s'Tal'Diann (Fleet Admiral of the Tal'Diann, the Romulan Military Intelligence Fleet) commanding.

Recent activities of the crew of the D.Ch.M.R. LivianaCharvanek (R.R.W. LivianaCharvanek) and myself had left me somewhat interested in testing some other ships which had come into my personal squadron.

I have and have had for some time the D.Ch.M.R. LivianaCharvanek as my personal flagship, and the flagship of the Tal'Diann.  The LivianaCharvanek is a T'varo Light Warbird Retrofit with Advanced Romulan Battle Cloak and Destabilized Plasma Torpedo Launcher standard.  I have had the ship outfitted with the Breen Absolute Zero set, and armed it with torpedoes and warheads.  Consoles are geared toward flying under cloak with the Breen set, without shields, and launching projectile weapons.  Stations are assigned based on skills advantageous for a cloaked torpedo boat.  The department chiefs and active bridge crew are the best of the best, and include Romulans, Remans, and Orions.  The duty officers and crew consist of Romulans, Remans, Orions, Klingons, Gorn, Nausicaans, Vorta, Jem'Hadar, Humans, Vulcans, Trill, Betazeds, and Letheans.  Our alliance with the Orion-Klingon Empire has provided benefits, but we also manage to recruit dissidents from the Federation on occasion as well (hence the Vulcans, Humans, Betazeds, and Trill), and have also demonstrated our might to the Dominion, whence came the defectors from the Dominion.

The LivianaCharvanek is, thus, a truly magnificent ship with a truly magnificent crew.

I also have in my squadron a variety of other vessels of both Romulan and Klingon design, and may be getting an Orion vessel or two in the future.  The likelihood that I'll be getting some Orion small craft for the hangars of my carriers is high, but that's more a long-term goal.

However, I had recently come into possession of the A.R.W. (Alliance Romulan Warbird, a captured ship from the Mirror Universe) Dhael'Temarhkh, a Mirror Ha'apax Advanced Warbird.  I have already commanded the R.R.W. Ssaedhe, a Ha'apax Advanced Warbird, and I was curious to see how the Mirror Universe counterpart would compare.  Admittedly, I did not have it outfitted as well as the LivianaCharvanek (and possibly not as well as the Ssaedhe, either), but for all that, I hoped it might prove an interesting diversion for my crew and myself.  The LivianaCharvanek, during battle, is ordinarily under cloak without shields.  This means the ship's hull is exposed to kinetic damage from torpedo and warhead explosions, warp core breaches, singularity core breaches, and so on.  Missions in the recent past had been a bit ...

At any rate, having finally gotten the Dhael'Temarhkh outfitted to a better than satisfactory state, the crew of the LivianaCharvanek (apart from three contingents left aboard for security purposes) beamed to the Dhael'Temarhkh earlier in the evening.  We set course for the Kahless Expanse to rendezvous with the R.R.W. Sol Maximus, a T'varo Light Warbird Retrofit commanded by my colleague, Khre'Enriov Satsutekh.  Entering the Expanse, we encountered numerous Federation Starfleet ship squadrons, which invariably fired upon us without provocation;  they must have known that they were trespassing in Klingon territory, and more to the point, they must have been up to no good.  Nevertheless, they fell before our combined might.  It was a glorious battle, the Dhael'Temarhkh's baptism in blood and fire.  The ship's controls took some getting used to, but the bridge crew managed to work them out.

After reporting to Klingon High Command and New Romulus Command Center, the Dhael'Temarhkh returned to Drozana Station and the crew beamed over to the LivianaCharvanek.  The security contingents were then beamed to the Dhael'Temarhkh, and ordered to the shipyard at New Romulus.

While the Mirror ship shows some promise, it will take some time to get the vessel outfitted to my preferred specifications.  Until that time, it will remain at New Romulus.  I suspect that I will always prefer the LivianaCharvanek over the Dhael'Temarhkh for my personal flagship, but the right upgrades could change my mind.

Meanwhile, I also have three new Romulan dreadnought warbirds which have likewise recently come into my personal squadron to finish outfitting and pick names for.  I have a Tulwar, a Scimitar, and a Falchion.  I suspect that the Tulwar dreadnought warbird will be very interesting, it being more of a science vessel, and I being a science officer.  Time will tell.  At any rate, the Tulwar will be the next ship outfitted and named, and then likewise baptized in blood and fire.

The Tal'Diann, part 2 (newly updated with more PICTURES!!!)

Virinat and Admiral t'Prell

Like many another of the far-flung colonies of Romulans and Remans after the Hobus Supernova, Virinat was a planet with a peaceful agricultural settlement.  That all changed one night, thanks to Colonel Hakeev's Tal'Shiar, the Elachi, and the Iconians, with the Empress' endorsement.

The colony was besieged.  The enemy was made up, on the ground, almost exclusively of Tal'Shiar agents and various constructed drone vessels, as well as strange craft which beamed people aboard and fled back into orbit.  In orbit and leaving the system, the enemy was once more primarily a Tal'Shiar fleet, although other vessels were seen.  At the time, those other vessels were of unknown provenance.  History records them by a name that came to be given to them after the siege of Virinat:  Elachi.  At this time, however, they were unknown aliens, to the people of Virinat.

The colonists on Virinat were farmers, engineers, scientists, diplomats, advisors, traders, and artists, but they were not soldiers.  A few old, retired military personnel were about, who did what they could, and some of the youth took up the mantle of command and resistance on that day.

Gessatra ir'Virinat t'Prell was one such Romulan who gathered survivors and helped evacuate the planet.  Flying away from Virinat in an old T'Liss Light Warbird, the orange imperial bird-of-prey heraldry on the underbelly intact, Gessatra t'Prell began a career which would, in time, bring her to the position of Tal'Diann galae'Enriov, Romulan Intelligence Fleet Admiral of the Fleet.

This T'Liss, which probably last saw active combat service a hundred years ago or more, was given the name "ch'Rihan," the name of the Romulan primary planet until the Hobus Supernova, and in the R.R.W. ch'Rihan and subsequent vessels, t'Prell and her steadily growing crew were involved, often in central roles, with many of the key events of more recent Romulan history, either prominently or behind the scenes (having done work as an Operative for Klingon Defense Forces Intelligence as well as an Asset and later Agent for the Tal'Diann prior to going on to even darker operations as a Saboteur and Spy).  The execution of Hakeev the Mad, the Iconian capture of the Empress Sela, the Rediscovery of Mol'Rihan, the Recovery of the Sword of the Raptor Star, the breaking of the power of the Tal'Shiar fleet, the repelling of the Elachi invasion, a cleanup mission on Nimbus III from the Orion Syndicate Intelligence Division, encounters with Devidians and the past on Drozana Station, skirmishes with True Way Cardassians and Jem'Hadar, a Dominion invasion from the past on DS9, battles with Borg and Undine and Breen, all of these and more actions has she faced as her career advanced.

Not long after earning the rank of khre'Enriov (Vice Admiral), t'Prell was commissioned as the galae'Enriov (Fleet Admiral / Admiral of the Fleet) for the Tal'Diann KDF-allied fleet, and Captain of the Tal'Diann Flagship, the R.R.W. LivianaCharvanek, a T'Varo Light Warbird Retrofit torpedo boat.  (In real world real time, 21 June 2013, 11:09:17pm, US CDT, as seen here, seconds after the event:  The Tal'Diann is reborn within the New Romulan Republic ) Stardate 91077.19 is recorded as the moment when the new order of the Tal'Diann began, in the New Romulan Republic (as opposed to the old Romulan Star Empire), with galae'Enriov Gessatra ir'Virinat t'Prell at the helm.

Fleet Admiral t'Prell remains vigilant in her watch against incursions from the Tal'Shiar and their dark masters, as well as any other threats to the security of the New Romulan Republic, the Fleet of the New Romulan Republic, and the Fleet of the Tal'Diann, continuing in the finest tradition of Tal'Diann women like Liviana Charvanek.

The "ch'Rihan" is the "Romulus" -- it is the Romulan name of the Romulan Prime World, destroyed in the Hobus Supernova.
The "Senorix" is the "Ancient King" (Gaulish).
The "Sirona" is named for a Gallic star goddess.
The "Memenda" is named after the Romulan D7 Flagship of Riov Liviana Charvanek.
The "Senua" is named for a Gallo-Brittonic "Ancient One" goddess.
The "Ssaedhe" is the "Steadfast" (in Romulan).
The "Susse'Thrai" is the "She-Wolf" (or "Bitch").
The "Sienae" is the "Talon."
The "LivianaCharvanek" is named for the Riov (Romulan Fleet Commander) Liviana Charvanek, who led a squad of Romulan D7 Battle Cruisers in an effort to seize the Starfleet Flagship, the U.S.S. Enterprise N.C.C. 1701, then under command of Captain James T. Kirk, whose First Officer was Commander Spock, later Ambassador Spock.
The "Dhael'Temarhkh" is the "Nocturnal Bird."
The "H'Levreinnye" is the "Love-Devil" or "Lust-Devil" (a Romulan term of endearment).
The "Ri'Hhvaeh" is the "Spy" (more literally, the "Female-Spy," this is a term that can only be applied to a living being, so it seems odd that a spacecraft would be given this name, but the runabout was named for the woman commanding it, since Admiral t'Prell is herself "the Female-Spy").
